Alocasia Amazonica – Jungle Queen Vibes 14-19cm

Price range: R240.00 through R315.00

African Mask Plant (Alocasia Amazonica)

Scientific Name: Alocasia × amazonica (syn. Alocasia ‘Polly’)
Family: Araceae
Genus: Alocasia
Species: hybrid (sanderiana × longiloba)
Common Names / Known As: Alocasia Polly, African Mask Plant, Elephant Ear Polly, Kris Plant, Amazon Lily, Olifantsoor (Afrikaans)

Overview: Glossy, arrow-shaped leaves in the deepest emerald green with dramatic creamy-white veins that look hand-painted – pure jungle drama! This compact hybrid (not actually from the Amazon) is the ultimate “look-at-me” plant for Instagram shelves and modern Gauteng lounges. Compact size but massive attitude, it brings instant upscale tropical resort feels to Joburg apartments, Cape Town townhouses or Durban verandas.

Quirky Fact / Common Use: It goes fully dormant if unhappy – drops every single leaf like a supermodel throwing a tantrum, then bounces back with even bigger leaves once you fix the drama (usually just needs humidity and warmth)!**

Available Sizes: 14cm and 19cm Nursery Pots

Ideal For:

  • 🌿 Perfect drama queen for bright bathrooms, steamy KZN kitchens, or humid Cape summer patios – loves that sauna life.
  • 🎁 Show-stopping gift for plant collectors who already own “basic” Monsteras.
  • 🌱 Best for intermediate to pro plant parents – high reward but demands attention like a diva.
  • ✨ A must-have because those sculpted leaves add insane texture and contrast, purify air, and make every flat look like a Bali villa.
  • 🌱 Its glossy, shield-like foliage grows 40-80 cm tall indoors, ideal for statement tabletops, plant stands, office reception desks or as a throne on your bedroom pedestal.

(Received plants may differ slightly from images displayed. Unless otherwise specified, all Plants come in black nursery pots)

Tips: 🌱 Leaves turning yellow and dropping? Classic overwatering or cold shock – let top 3-5 cm dry and keep above 18°C. Brown crispy edges = humidity too low (Highveld winter nightmare) – mist daily, group with other plants or run a humidifier. Black spots on leaves = cold water splash or fungal – water soil only, never the leaves, and improve airflow. Spider mites love the undersides – shower the plant monthly and wipe leaves with neem solution at first sign of tiny webs. It sulks in low light – leggy stems mean move closer to the window.

Light: ☀️ Bright indirect light is non-negotiable – 1-2 m from a window with sheer curtain or filtered morning sun keeps veins crisp white; direct afternoon sun scorches in seconds.

Watering: 💧 Keep evenly moist but never soggy – water when top 3 cm feels dry (weekly in summer, every 10-14 days winter). Use lukewarm water and perfect drainage – hates wet feet more than anything.

Temperature: 🌡️ Thrives at 20-30°C with high humidity – exactly like coastal SA summers; anything below 15°C (Joburg winter nights) causes instant leaf drop.

Feeding: 🌿 Apply a balanced, diluted Liquid Fertilizer (e.g., 5:1:5 or Seagro) every two weeks spring and summer only. Add slow-release pellets in September for steady feeding. Skip winter completely – let it rest or it gets weak growth.

**Pet Friendly?NO – Highly toxic to cats, dogs & kids (calcium oxalate crystals cause intense mouth burning); keep on high shelves away from curious paws and toddlers.

What would you like to see:

To ensure fresh and healthy plants we follow a strict weekly shipping schedule:

Mondays: We prepare plants for shipping! This means wrapping the soil, adding plant sleeves, and one last pre-travel watering.
Tuesdays: We wake up bright and early to get all plants carefully packaged for shipping in the morning, in the afternoon we hand over plants with the longest travel ahead of them to our courier partners (this means Eastern, Western and Northern Cape)
Wednesdays: If there are any plants that did not fit in the Tuesday truck, they travel in the second batch on a Wednesday.
Thursdays and Fridays: No plants are shipped, we carefully monitor all the travelling plant babies to ensure they arrive safely at their new homes !

Why do we do this?

Our shipping schedule works this way to ensure that your plants are less likely to spend a weekend in the courier depot ! Our shipping schedule is designed this way to ensure that your plants are fresh and healthy, for this same reason we do not like keeping stock for extended periods of time which means that stock received on Thursdays and Fridays will only be shipped the following week.
