Captivating Romantic Bloomer

Scientific Name: Clerodendrum thomsoniae
Family: Lamiaceae Genus: Clerodendrum Species: thomsoniae
Common Names / Known As: Bleeding Heart Vine, Glory Bower, Bagflower, Tropical Bleeding Heart, Bleeding Glorybower

Overview: This stunning twining vine from tropical West Africa dazzles with clusters of white balloon-like calyces from which vivid red “bleeding” hearts dramatically emerge, creating a breathtaking romantic display. The glossy dark green oval leaves provide the perfect backdrop for these exotic blooms that last for months. As a fast-growing indoor climber, it brings a touch of tropical elegance and heartfelt charm to South African homes, thriving in our warmer coastal regions or as a sheltered patio star.

Quirky Fact / Common Use: The white “bag” inflates first like a lantern, then the red corolla bursts out like a drop of blood – nature’s own love letter that turns pale lavender as it ages, keeping the show going longer than most flowers!

Ideal For:

  • 🌿 Perfect for balconies, patios, or verandas in frost-free KZN, Cape Town summers, or Gauteng indoors – ideal for apartments, townhouses, or homes with limited floor space.
  • 🎁 Brilliant gift for Valentine’s, anniversaries, or housewarmings – its heart-shaped blooms scream romance!
  • 🌱 Great for intermediate plant parents who love a bit of drama; moderately easy but rewards attentive care with non-stop flowers.
  • ✨ A must-have for adding bold tropical texture, vibrant colour contrast, and natural humidity to mixed hanging baskets or trellised features – purifies air while stealing the show.
  • 🌱 Its elegant glossy foliage and cascading vines grow 150-300 cm indoors, perfect for hanging baskets, shelves, or trained up a trellis on tabletops and countertops.

(Received plants may differ slightly from images displayed. Unless otherwise specified, all Plants come in black nursery pots)

Care: 🌱 Common issues include drooping leaves from underwatering – perk it up with a deep drink but don’t repeat often as it stresses the plant. Yellowing or excessive leaf drop usually means overwatering or low light; let soil dry slightly between waterings and move to brighter spot. Brown crispy edges signal dry air (common in dry Highveld winters) – mist daily or pop on a pebble tray. Pests love stressed vines: mealybugs (cottony spots), scale (waxy bumps), and spider mites (fine webbing + speckled leaves) – wipe with organic insecticide soap and improve airflow.

Light: ☀️ Medium to bright indirect light is ideal – a north-facing window or filtered morning sun keeps blooms coming without scorching.

Watering: 💧 Keep evenly moist but never soggy – water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry (usually weekly in summer, less in winter). This thirsty tropical hates drying out completely.

Temperature: 🌡️ Best at 18-27°C year-round – perfect for most South African homes; protect from cold drafts below 10°C (bring indoors in chilly Joburg winters or Free State frosts).

Feeding: 🌿 Apply a balanced, diluted Liquid Fertilizer (e.g., 5:1:4 or 3:1:5) every two weeks during spring and summer growth; switch to slow-release in autumn. Cut back in winter when the plant rests – no feeding needed to avoid weak growth.

Pet Friendly? ❌ NO – Toxic to cats, dogs, and children if ingested; keep out of reach.

What would you like to see:

To ensure fresh and healthy plants we follow a strict weekly shipping schedule:

Mondays: We prepare plants for shipping! This means wrapping the soil, adding plant sleeves, and one last pre-travel watering.
Tuesdays: We wake up bright and early to get all plants carefully packaged for shipping in the morning, in the afternoon we hand over plants with the longest travel ahead of them to our courier partners (this means Eastern, Western and Northern Cape)
Wednesdays: If there are any plants that did not fit in the Tuesday truck, they travel in the second batch on a Wednesday.
Thursdays and Fridays: No plants are shipped, we carefully monitor all the travelling plant babies to ensure they arrive safely at their new homes !

Why do we do this?

Our shipping schedule works this way to ensure that your plants are less likely to spend a weekend in the courier depot ! Our shipping schedule is designed this way to ensure that your plants are fresh and healthy, for this same reason we do not like keeping stock for extended periods of time which means that stock received on Thursdays and Fridays will only be shipped the following week.
