Vibrant Peacock Elegance – Calathea veitchiana ‘Medallion’

Scientific Name: Calathea veitchiana ‘Medallion’
Common Names / Known As: Medallion calathea, prayer plant, peacock plant

Overview: Calathea veitchiana ‘Medallion’ captivates with its broad, oval leaves boasting intricate green and cream patterns, resembling a peacock’s tail, native to South American rainforests. This compact plant thrives indoors in South Africa, adding tropical sophistication to any space. Its glossy foliage and nightly leaf-folding habit make it a must-have for plant lovers seeking dynamic decor.

Quirky Fact / Common Use: Known as a “prayer plant” for its leaves that fold up at night like hands in prayer, Calathea Medallion is a South African Instagram star for its mesmerising patterns! In some cultures, its vibrant foliage is believed to bring calm and harmony to homes.

Ideal For:

  • Apartments, offices, or homes, especially in lounges, bedrooms, or humid bathrooms for its compact, decorative appeal.

  • Beginner to intermediate plant enthusiasts due to its moderate maintenance needs, requiring attention to humidity.

  • A must-have for adding texture and contrast to mixed plant arrangements, purifying indoor air, and creating a serene tropical vibe.

  • Its bold, statement-making foliage grows to 30–60 cm in height and is ideal for tabletops, office desks, or low shelves.

Available in: 14cm Nursery Pot

🌱 Care: Calathea Medallion is a showy diva that dislikes dry air—low humidity, common in SA’s winters, causes brown, crispy leaf edges, so mist daily or use a pebble tray. Overwatering leads to yellow leaves and root rot; use well-draining soil and check dryness before watering. Direct sun fades its intricate patterns, so opt for filtered light. Trim damaged leaves to maintain its peacock-like charm, and wipe foliage to deter pests like spider mites.

🌞 Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light, like a lounge or office 1–2 m from a window with sheer curtains to soften SA’s intense sun. A humid bathroom with filtered light is ideal for its tropical vibrancy. Avoid low light to prevent faded patterns and leggy growth.

💧 Watering: Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry, roughly every 7–10 days in SA’s warm spring/summer, less in winter; use rainwater to avoid mineral buildup. Overwatering causes root rot, so ensure pots have drainage holes and avoid waterlogged trays.

🌡️ Temperature: Prefers 18–26°C, ideal for South African homes, but protect from cold drafts below 12°C or heat above 30°C, common in summer.

🍽️ Feeding: Apply a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer like Talborne Nourish 7:1:2 (5 ml per litre) every 4 weeks in spring and summer to boost its patterned foliage. Reduce to every 8 weeks in autumn and winter when growth slows in SA’s cooler months. Slow-release granules can be used sparingly at planting to support steady growth.

🐾 Pet Friendly? ✅: Yes! Non-toxic to cats, dogs, aquatic life in fishtanks, and humans/children, making it a safe choice for South African households.

What would you like to see:

To ensure fresh and healthy plants we follow a strict weekly shipping schedule:

Mondays: We prepare plants for shipping! This means wrapping the soil, adding plant sleeves, and one last pre-travel watering.
Tuesdays: We wake up bright and early to get all plants carefully packaged for shipping in the morning, in the afternoon we hand over plants with the longest travel ahead of them to our courier partners (this means Eastern, Western and Northern Cape)
Wednesdays: If there are any plants that did not fit in the Tuesday truck, they travel in the second batch on a Wednesday.
Thursdays and Fridays: No plants are shipped, we carefully monitor all the travelling plant babies to ensure they arrive safely at their new homes !

Why do we do this?

Our shipping schedule works this way to ensure that your plants are less likely to spend a weekend in the courier depot ! Our shipping schedule is designed this way to ensure that your plants are fresh and healthy, for this same reason we do not like keeping stock for extended periods of time which means that stock received on Thursdays and Fridays will only be shipped the following week.
