Trailing Romantic Beauty

Scientific Name: Hoya carnosa
Common Names / Known As: Wax plant, porcelain flower, honey plant, Hindu rope (variegated forms)

Overview: Hoya carnosa captivates with its waxy, heart-shaped leaves and clusters of star-shaped, sweetly scented flowers, native to Southeast Asia and Australia. This evergreen vine thrives as an indoor plant in South Africa, trailing gracefully or climbing with support. Its glossy foliage and occasional blooms add romantic charm to any space, making it a favourite for plant lovers.

Quirky Fact / Common Use: In some Asian cultures, Hoya carnosa symbolises love and devotion, with its heart-shaped leaves often gifted to express affection—perfect for a South African Valentine’s Day surprise!

Available in: 14cm Nursery Pot and 16.5cm Hanging Basket

Ideal For:

  • Apartments, offices, or homes, especially in lounges, bedrooms, or shaded braai areas for a touch of elegance.

  • Beginner plant enthusiasts due to its forgiving, low-maintenance nature.

  • A must-have for adding texture and contrast to mixed plant arrangements or hanging baskets, purifying indoor air, and boosting serene vibes.

  • Its elegant, smooth foliage grows to 30–90 cm long (trailing or climbing) and is ideal for shelves, hanging pots, or countertops.

(Received plants may differ slightly from images displayed. Unless otherwise specified, all Plants come in black nursery pots)

  • 🌱 Care: Hoya carnosa is a resilient charmer but dislikes overwatering, which causes yellow leaves or root rot—ensure well-draining soil and let it dry out between waterings. Brown leaf edges signal low humidity, common in SA’s dry winters; mist occasionally or place near a humidifier. Direct sun fades its glossy leaves, so stick to bright, indirect light. Trim damaged leaves to maintain its lush look and encourage bushier growth.
  • 🌞 Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light, like 1–2 m from a window with sheer curtains in a lounge or office; tolerates low light but blooms less.
  • 💧 Watering: Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry, roughly every 7–14 days in SA’s warm spring/summer, less in winter; avoid soggy soil to prevent rot.
  • 🌡️ Temperature: Prefers 18–24°C, avoiding cold drafts below 10°C or hot spots above 30°C, common in South African homes.
  • 🍽️Feeding: Apply a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer like Talborne Nourish 7:1:2 (5 ml per litre) every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer to enhance foliage and blooms. Reduce to every 8 weeks in autumn and winter when growth slows. Slow-release granules can be used sparingly at planting to support steady growth.
  • 🐾 Pet Friendly?✅ Yes! Non-toxic to cats, dogs, aquatic life in fishtanks, and humans/children, making it a safe choice for South African households.

What would you like to see:

To ensure fresh and healthy plants we follow a strict weekly shipping schedule:

Mondays: We prepare plants for shipping! This means wrapping the soil, adding plant sleeves, and one last pre-travel watering.
Tuesdays: We wake up bright and early to get all plants carefully packaged for shipping in the morning, in the afternoon we hand over plants with the longest travel ahead of them to our courier partners (this means Eastern, Western and Northern Cape)
Wednesdays: If there are any plants that did not fit in the Tuesday truck, they travel in the second batch on a Wednesday.
Thursdays and Fridays: No plants are shipped, we carefully monitor all the travelling plant babies to ensure they arrive safely at their new homes !

Why do we do this?

Our shipping schedule works this way to ensure that your plants are less likely to spend a weekend in the courier depot ! Our shipping schedule is designed this way to ensure that your plants are fresh and healthy, for this same reason we do not like keeping stock for extended periods of time which means that stock received on Thursdays and Fridays will only be shipped the following week.
