Hypoestes Polka Dot 9cm

R55.00

Playful Freckled Pop Sensation

Scientific Name: Hypoestes phyllostachya, Family: Acanthaceae Genus: Hypoestes Species: phyllostachya
Common Names / Known As: Polka Dot Plant, Freckle Face, Speckled Splash, Pink Splash, Confetti Plant, Measles Plant

Overview: This proudly South African native (also from Madagascar) bursts with oval green leaves absolutely covered in pink, white or red freckles – like someone went wild with a paint splatter gun! The soft, velvety foliage creates a bushy mound that screams fun and whimsy in any room. Super-popular as an indoor stunner in Joburg flats, Durban townhouses or Cape Town homes, it brings instant party vibes and thrives in our warmer coastal summers or bright inland windows.

Quirky Fact / Common Use: Pinch the tips regularly and it stays compact forever – but let it flower and it suddenly shoots up leggy like a teenager on growth spurt, then tries to go dormant… keep snipping for non-stop freckle party!

Ideal For:

  • 🌿 Brilliant for small-space living – balconies, kitchen counters, bathrooms (loves the steam!), home offices or student digs in Pretoria, Bloem or PE.
  • 🎁 The ultimate “just because” gift for kids, teachers or new homeowners – zero fuss, maximum smiles!
  • 🌱 Perfect for beginners who want quick wins; super-forgiving and bounces back fast from rookie mistakes.
  • ✨ A must-have for injecting playful texture and insane colour contrast into mixed pots, terrariums or shelfie jungles – boosts humidity and purifies air like a boss.
  • 🌱 Its bold freckled foliage stays lush and compact at 20-50 cm tall, ideal for tabletops, windowsills, school desks or as a colourful filler on bookshelves.

Available Sizes: 9cm Nursery Pot

(Received plants may differ slightly from images displayed. Unless otherwise specified, all Plants come in black nursery pots)

Care: 🌱 Most common drama is brown crispy edges – classic dry-air cry (hello Highveld winters!); fix with daily misting or a pebble tray with water. Yellow leaves usually scream overwatering – let top 3 cm dry properly between drinks. Fading colours or leggy growth? Not enough light, move closer to that north window. Pests like aphids (tiny green suckers) or spider mites (fine webbing) love new growth – blast with organic neem soap spray and improve airflow. Drooping? Thirsty plant – give a good soak and it’ll perk up in hours.

Light: ☀️ Bright indirect light is non-negotiable – east or north-facing window keeps those freckles popping; too little and it goes plain green, too much direct sun and leaves scorch.

Watering: 💧 Keep soil evenly moist like a wrung-out sponge – water when top 2-3 cm feels dry (every 4-7 days in summer, stretch to 10 days in winter). Never let it sit in water or roots rot faster than you can say “freckle face”.

Temperature: 🌡️ Loves 18-27°C – exactly like most SA homes year-round; protect from cold snaps below 15°C (bring inside during icy Joburg winters or Cape southerly busters).

Feeding: 🌿 Apply a balanced, diluted Liquid Fertilizer (e.g., 5:1:5 or 3:1:5) every two weeks from September to April; go half-strength to avoid burnt tips. Skip winter completely – let it chill without extra food.

Pet Friendly? ✅ YES – Completely non-toxic to cats, dogs, kids and even fish tanks; nibbling might cause a tummy rumble but zero drama (ASPCA approved!).

What would you like to see:

To ensure fresh and healthy plants we follow a strict weekly shipping schedule:

Mondays: We prepare plants for shipping! This means wrapping the soil, adding plant sleeves, and one last pre-travel watering.
Tuesdays: We wake up bright and early to get all plants carefully packaged for shipping in the morning, in the afternoon we hand over plants with the longest travel ahead of them to our courier partners (this means Eastern, Western and Northern Cape)
Wednesdays: If there are any plants that did not fit in the Tuesday truck, they travel in the second batch on a Wednesday.
Thursdays and Fridays: No plants are shipped, we carefully monitor all the travelling plant babies to ensure they arrive safely at their new homes !

Why do we do this?

Our shipping schedule works this way to ensure that your plants are less likely to spend a weekend in the courier depot ! Our shipping schedule is designed this way to ensure that your plants are fresh and healthy, for this same reason we do not like keeping stock for extended periods of time which means that stock received on Thursdays and Fridays will only be shipped the following week.
