Breathtaking Variegated Showstopper, Monstera Elbo

Scientific Name: Monstera deliciosa ‘Elbo’ (Thai Constellation sport)
Family: Araceae
Genus: Monstera
Species: deliciosa Cultivar: Elbo (Thai White sport)
Common Names / Known As: Monstera Thai Elbo, Monstera Albo Elbo, Thai White Monstera, Variegated Monstera Elbo

Overview: This ultra-rare Thai sport takes the classic Swiss Cheese Plant and splatters it with creamy-white, mint and half-moon variegation that looks like someone dipped the leaves in paint! Every new leaf is a total lottery – some emerge almost pure white, others marbled like expensive Italian stone. A true collector’s dream that turns Joburg apartments, Cape Town lofts or Durban townhouses into instant tropical art galleries.

Quirky Fact / Common Use: Because of a genetic quirk, some leaves can come out 90% white with almost no chlorophyll – the plant literally sacrifices part of itself for beauty, then grows a green leaf next to “feed” its pale sibling!

Available Sizes: 14cm Nursery Pot

Ideal For:

  • 🌿 Statement floor plant in bright Gauteng lounges, KZN open-plan homes or sunny Cape Town studios – screams “I know my plants”.
  • 🎁 Ultimate flex gift for serious collectors or housewarming brags that cost more than a braai set.
  • 🌱 Strictly for intermediate to pro plant parents – high reward but needs babysitting like a celebrity.
  • ✨ A must-have because it’s NASA-level air-purifying, adds insane variegated texture no poster can match, and makes every shelfie go viral.
  • 🌱 Its bold, fenestrated foliage grows 80–200 cm indoors, perfect floor-standing next to the couch, on a plant stand in the entrance hall or as the king of your urban jungle corner.

(Received plants may differ slightly from images displayed. Unless otherwise specified, all Plants come in black nursery pots)

Tips for Care: 🌱 All-white leaves scorching? Too much direct sun – move 2 m back or add a sheer curtain immediately. Brown edges or crispy tips = dry air (classic Highveld winter) – mist twice daily and run a humidifier. Yellowing green parts while white stays perfect = normal (white sections have no chlorophyll), but full yellow leaves = overwatering – let top 5–7 cm dry properly. Black stems = root rot from soggy soil; repot fast into airy mix with perlite. Spider mites love the white patches – shower monthly and treat with organic neem at first webbing.

Light: ☀️ Bright indirect light is everything – 1–2 m from a window with sheer curtain or filtered all-day glow; direct sun burns white sections in minutes, low light turns new leaves green and boring.

Watering: 💧 Water when top 5–7 cm feels dry (every 7–14 days summer, every 2–3 weeks winter); always use pots with drainage – this beauty hates wet feet more than a cat hates bath time.

Temperature: 🌡️ Ideal 20–30 °C with high humidity – perfect coastal SA summer; anything below 15 °C (Joburg winter nights) causes black spots and leaf drop.

Feeding: 🌿 Apply a balanced, diluted Liquid Fertilizer (e.g., 5:1:5 or Seagro) at half strength every 3–4 weeks spring & summer only. Skip slow-release on heavy variegates (can cause green reversion); no feeding in winter.

Pet Friendly? ❌ NO – Highly toxic to cats, dogs & kids (calcium oxalate crystals cause severe mouth irritation); keep well out of reach of curious Labradors and toddlers.

What would you like to see:

To ensure fresh and healthy plants we follow a strict weekly shipping schedule:

Mondays: We prepare plants for shipping! This means wrapping the soil, adding plant sleeves, and one last pre-travel watering.
Tuesdays: We wake up bright and early to get all plants carefully packaged for shipping in the morning, in the afternoon we hand over plants with the longest travel ahead of them to our courier partners (this means Eastern, Western and Northern Cape)
Wednesdays: If there are any plants that did not fit in the Tuesday truck, they travel in the second batch on a Wednesday.
Thursdays and Fridays: No plants are shipped, we carefully monitor all the travelling plant babies to ensure they arrive safely at their new homes !

Why do we do this?

Our shipping schedule works this way to ensure that your plants are less likely to spend a weekend in the courier depot ! Our shipping schedule is designed this way to ensure that your plants are fresh and healthy, for this same reason we do not like keeping stock for extended periods of time which means that stock received on Thursdays and Fridays will only be shipped the following week.
