Vibrant Veined Air-Purifying Showstopper, Nerve Plant

Scientific Name: Fittonia albivenis (All Varieties)
Common Names / Known As: Nerve Plant, Mosaic Plant, Painted Net Leaf, Baby Tears, Silver Nerve

Overview: This vibrant indoor mood-lifter flaunts tiny oval leaves with electric pink, red, silver or white veins popping against lush green (or deep red) backgrounds like living artwork. Native to the steamy Peruvian rainforests and thriving as a carpet of colour in South African homes, all varieties excel as humidity-loving miniatures. Their compact, spreading form brings quirky, carnival energy to terrariums or table tops, perfect for playful October greenery.

Quirky Fact / Common Use: In SA Tswana traditions, nerve plants are tucked into spring picnic baskets to “spark” joyful conversations at braais—its veiny patterns symbolise lively gossip lines for epic jol vibes and heart-to-heart blessings!

Available sizes: 12cm Nursery Pots

Ideal For:

  • Cosy flats, small townhouses, open-plan offices, bathrooms & limited-space braais in Joburg or Cape Town homes
  • Beginner plant lovers or as a thoughtful gift—moderately fussy but rewarding with daily spritz love!
  • A must-have for air-purifying oxygen boost, adding veiny texture & colourful contrast to terrarium mixes or mixed planters. It’s boldly elegant foliage makes a fun statement and grows to 10-20cm—ideal for table tops, counter tops, terrariums, office desks or school counters.

(Received plants may differ slightly from images displayed. Unless otherwise specified, all Plants come in black nursery pots)

🌿 Care: Dry air flattens it like a deflated whoopee cushion—mist daily or use a pebble tray to avoid crispy vein edges! Overwatering rots roots; let top 2cm dry slightly between drinks. Trim leggy stems for bushier colour pops. Pro tip: Group in a mini greenhouse vibe for unbeatable Peruvian rainforest jol!

☀️ Light: Indirect low to medium light—loves north-facing windows or under grow lights; direct sun bleaches veins like faded Joburg graffiti!

💧 Watering: Keep soil evenly moist (every 5-7 days); use room-temp water & ensure good drainage—never let it sit in soggy saucer like drowned koeksisters!

🌡️ Temperature: 18-24°C—perfect for mild SA springs & cosy winter homes; keep away from icy draughts or hot braai vents below 15°C.

🍽️ Feeding: Use Slow Release Fertilizer pellets every 3 months year-round, or Apply a balanced, diluted Liquid Fertilizer (e.g., 5:1:4) every 4 weeks in spring & summer; skip in winter.

Pet Friendly?Yes—totally safe for cats, dogs, kids & humans; fine for non-aquatic setups, but not for live fish tanks or ponds. 🐶🐱

What would you like to see:

To ensure fresh and healthy plants we follow a strict weekly shipping schedule:

Mondays: We prepare plants for shipping! This means wrapping the soil, adding plant sleeves, and one last pre-travel watering.
Tuesdays: We wake up bright and early to get all plants carefully packaged for shipping in the morning, in the afternoon we hand over plants with the longest travel ahead of them to our courier partners (this means Eastern, Western and Northern Cape)
Wednesdays: If there are any plants that did not fit in the Tuesday truck, they travel in the second batch on a Wednesday.
Thursdays and Fridays: No plants are shipped, we carefully monitor all the travelling plant babies to ensure they arrive safely at their new homes !

Why do we do this?

Our shipping schedule works this way to ensure that your plants are less likely to spend a weekend in the courier depot ! Our shipping schedule is designed this way to ensure that your plants are fresh and healthy, for this same reason we do not like keeping stock for extended periods of time which means that stock received on Thursdays and Fridays will only be shipped the following week.
