Golden Fiddle-Shaped Splendour

Scientific Name: Philodendron bipennifolium ‘Aurea’
Common Names / Known As: Golden Violin, fiddle-leaf philodendron, horsehead philodendron

Overview: Philodendron bipennifolium ‘Aurea’ dazzles with its glossy, golden-green, violin-shaped leaves, native to South American rainforests. This climbing or trailing plant thrives indoors in South Africa, adding a burst of tropical sunshine to any space. Its unique, lobed foliage grows larger with support, making it a showstopper for plant enthusiasts seeking bold decor.

Quirky Fact / Common Use: The Golden Violin’s leaves resemble a violin’s curves, earning its musical nickname among South African plant lovers, who adore it for Instagram-worthy displays! In some tropical cultures, its vibrant foliage is thought to bring energy and creativity to homes.

Ideal For:

  • Apartments, offices, or homes, especially in lounges, bedrooms, or shaded braai areas for its striking decor appeal.

  • Intermediate plant enthusiasts due to its moderate maintenance needs, requiring attention to humidity and support for climbing.

  • A must-have for adding texture and contrast to mixed plant arrangements, purifying indoor air, and creating a bold tropical vibe.

  • Its bold, statement-making foliage grows to 30–120 cm (climbing or trailing) and is ideal for shelves, hanging baskets, or floor-standing with a moss pole.

🌱 Care: Philodendron bipennifolium ‘Aurea’ loves attention but hates soggy roots—overwatering causes yellow leaves and root rot, so use well-draining soil and check dryness before watering. Brown leaf edges, common in SA’s dry winters, signal low humidity; mist regularly or use a pebble tray to keep its golden glow vibrant. Direct sun fades its vivid foliage, so opt for filtered light. Trim damaged leaves to encourage bushy growth, and check for pests like spider mites, wiping leaves gently to restore shine.

🌞 Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light, like a lounge or office 1–2 m from a window with sheer curtains to soften SA’s intense sun. A humid bathroom with filtered light is perfect for its tropical flair. Avoid low light to prevent leggy growth and loss of golden hues.

💧 Watering: Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry, roughly every 7–10 days in SA’s warm spring/summer, less in winter; use rainwater to avoid mineral buildup. Overwatering leads to root rot, so ensure pots have drainage holes and avoid waterlogged trays.

🌡️ Temperature: Prefers 18–26°C, ideal for South African homes, but protect from cold drafts below 12°C or heat above 30°C, common in summer.

🍽️ Feeding: Apply a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer like Talborne Nourish 7:1:2 (5 ml per litre) every 4 weeks in spring and summer to boost its vibrant foliage. Reduce to every 8 weeks in autumn and winter when growth slows in SA’s cooler months. Slow-release granules can be used sparingly at planting to support steady growth.

🐾 Pet Friendly? ❌: No—toxic to cats, dogs, and humans/children if ingested, causing mouth irritation; keep away from pets and fish tanks.

What would you like to see:

To ensure fresh and healthy plants we follow a strict weekly shipping schedule:

Mondays: We prepare plants for shipping! This means wrapping the soil, adding plant sleeves, and one last pre-travel watering.
Tuesdays: We wake up bright and early to get all plants carefully packaged for shipping in the morning, in the afternoon we hand over plants with the longest travel ahead of them to our courier partners (this means Eastern, Western and Northern Cape)
Wednesdays: If there are any plants that did not fit in the Tuesday truck, they travel in the second batch on a Wednesday.
Thursdays and Fridays: No plants are shipped, we carefully monitor all the travelling plant babies to ensure they arrive safely at their new homes !

Why do we do this?

Our shipping schedule works this way to ensure that your plants are less likely to spend a weekend in the courier depot ! Our shipping schedule is designed this way to ensure that your plants are fresh and healthy, for this same reason we do not like keeping stock for extended periods of time which means that stock received on Thursdays and Fridays will only be shipped the following week.
