Poinsettia Festive Fun 14cm

R175.00

Iconic Festive Showstopper

Scientific Name: Euphorbia pulcherrima
Family: Euphorbiaceae
Genus: Euphorbia
Species: pulcherrima (modern red cultivars)
Common Names / Known As: Poinsettia, Christmas Star, Kerstster (Afrikaans), iDlaba (Zulu), Flame Leaf, Lobster Flower

Overview: The ultimate South African Christmas icon – those flaming red (or white/pink) β€œflowers” are actually colourful bracts that turn traffic-stopping vivid from November to February. Dark green leaves below make the display pop even more. Every Joburg Checkers, Cape Town Woolies and Durban Spar goes mad for them in December – bring that same festive braai-table wow straight into your lounge or office reception.

Quirky Fact / Common Use: In Mexico (where it comes from) they grow into 4 m bushes, but our nursery wizards force them short and bushy so they fit perfectly on your coffee table – and the red colour only happens if they get 14 hours of total darkness every night for 8 weeks (that’s why they arrive ready-to-glow in November!).

Available in: 14cm Nursery Pots

Ideal For:

  • 🌿 Perfect festive centrepiece in Gauteng homes, KZN verandas, or Cape Town dinner tables – instant December cheer!
  • 🎁 The classic Christmas gift for teachers, neighbours, grans or secret Santa under R300.
  • 🌱 Super-easy for beginners – basically a β€œset and forget” holiday decoration that even black thumbs nail.
  • ✨ A must-have because it screams South African summer Christmas, purifies air gently, and makes every selfie look like a magazine shoot.
  • 🌱 Its bold, fiery bracts and compact shape grow 30-60 cm tall, ideal for tabletops, mantelpieces, reception desks or as a colourful pop on the braai side-table.

(Received plants may differ slightly from images displayed. Unless otherwise specified, all Plants come in black nursery pots)

Tips: 🌱 Leaves or bracts dropping fast? Cold draught or sudden move – keep away from doors and air-con blasts. Yellow lower leaves = overwatering (biggest killer) – let top 2 cm dry completely before next drink. White sticky sap on leaves? Mealybugs love the festive season too – wipe with cotton bud + surgical spirits or spray organic neem. Brown edges = dry air – mist lightly or stand on pebble tray (especially in dry Highveld Decembers). Never leave sitting in water – roots rot in 48 hours.

Light: β˜€οΈ Bright indirect light all day – east or north window is perfect; a few hours of gentle morning sun keeps bracts bright red longer.

Watering: πŸ’§ Water only when top 2-3 cm soil is dry (poke finger in) – usually every 7-10 days in hot SA summer, less if your house is air-conditioned. Always empty saucer after 20 minutes.

Temperature: 🌑️ Loves 18-25Β°C daytime, no lower than 15Β°C at night – exactly like a cosy SA Christmas; below 10Β°C (rare Joburg cold snap) and bracts drop overnight.

Feeding: 🌿 Apply a balanced, diluted Liquid Fertilizer (e.g., 5:1:5 or Multifeed) once a month from September to December only – stop completely after Christmas so it rests and preps for next year’s colour.

Pet Friendly? ❌ NO – Mildly toxic to cats, dogs & kids (white sap irritates mouth and tummy); keep on high tables away from curious Labradors and toddlers.

What would you like to see:

To ensure fresh and healthy plants we follow a strict weekly shipping schedule:

Mondays: We prepare plants for shipping! This means wrapping the soil, adding plant sleeves, and one last pre-travel watering.
Tuesdays: We wake up bright and early to get all plants carefully packaged for shipping in the morning, in the afternoon we hand over plants with the longest travel ahead of them to our courier partners (this means Eastern, Western and Northern Cape)
Wednesdays: If there are any plants that did not fit in the Tuesday truck, they travel in the second batch on a Wednesday.
Thursdays and Fridays: No plants are shipped, we carefully monitor all the travelling plant babies to ensure they arrive safely at their new homes !

Why do we do this?

Our shipping schedule works this way to ensure that your plants are less likely to spend a weekend in the courier depot ! Our shipping schedule is designed this way to ensure that your plants are fresh and healthy, for this same reason we do not like keeping stock for extended periods of time which means that stock received on Thursdays and Fridays will only be shipped the following week.
