Vibrant Climbing Air-Purifying Wonder, Creeping Gig

Scientific Name: Ficus pumila
Common Names / Known As: Creeping Fig, Climbing Fig, Creeping Ficus

Overview: This vibrant indoor adventurer boasts small, heart-shaped leaves with glossy green texture that cling and cascade like playful spring monkeys. Native to the rocky cliffs of East Asia and thriving in South African gardens, it excels as a fast-climbing stunner indoors. Its sticky tendrils bring wild, jungle-exploration vibes to walls, shelves or hanging baskets, perfect for low-maintenance October greenery.

Quirky Fact / Common Use: In SA Cape Malay traditions, creeping fig is trained over doorways during spring to “climb” good fortune indoors—its sticky grip symbolises unbreakable family bonds for epic braai gatherings and joyful jol seasons!

Available in: 12cm Nursery Pots

Ideal For:

  • Cosy flats, small townhouses, open-plan offices, bathrooms & limited-space braais in Joburg or Cape Town homes
  • Beginner plant lovers or as a thoughtful gift—super easy-going with zero drama!
  • A must-have for air-purifying oxygen boost, adding climbing texture & green contrast to terrarium mixes or mixed planters. It’s elegantly smooth foliage makes a bold statement and grows to 30-300cm—ideal for high shelves, hanging baskets, walls, office desks or school counters.

(Received plants may differ slightly from images displayed. Unless otherwise specified, all Plants come in black nursery pots)

🌿 Care: Overwatering causes yellow leaves like soggy koeksisters—let top 2-3cm dry out first to dodge root rot! Trim leggy vines with clean scissors for bushier growth & gently peel from walls if needed. For dusty leaves from dry air, mist weekly & wipe monthly. Pro tip: Guide tendrils onto moss poles for epic indoor jungle vibes!

☀️ Light: Indirect bright light—loves east-facing windows or near sheer curtains; tolerates low light but growth slows in dark corners like a lazy braai!

💧 Watering: Water when top 2-3cm soil feels dry (every 7-10 days); use room-temp water & ensure pot has drainage to prevent mushy roots.

🌡️ Temperature: 18-27°C—perfect for toasty SA springs & cosy winter homes; keep away from icy draughts or hot braai vents below 15°C.

🍽️ Feeding: Apply a balanced, diluted Liquid Fertilizer (e.g., 5:1:4) every 4-6 weeks in spring & summer; skip in winter or use Slow Release Fertilizer pellets for lazy feeding all year.

Pet Friendly? No—mildly toxic to cats & dogs if nibbled (causes mouth irritation); keep out of reach from kids & safe for non-aquatic setups, but not for live fish tanks or ponds.

What would you like to see:

To ensure fresh and healthy plants we follow a strict weekly shipping schedule:

Mondays: We prepare plants for shipping! This means wrapping the soil, adding plant sleeves, and one last pre-travel watering.
Tuesdays: We wake up bright and early to get all plants carefully packaged for shipping in the morning, in the afternoon we hand over plants with the longest travel ahead of them to our courier partners (this means Eastern, Western and Northern Cape)
Wednesdays: If there are any plants that did not fit in the Tuesday truck, they travel in the second batch on a Wednesday.
Thursdays and Fridays: No plants are shipped, we carefully monitor all the travelling plant babies to ensure they arrive safely at their new homes !

Why do we do this?

Our shipping schedule works this way to ensure that your plants are less likely to spend a weekend in the courier depot ! Our shipping schedule is designed this way to ensure that your plants are fresh and healthy, for this same reason we do not like keeping stock for extended periods of time which means that stock received on Thursdays and Fridays will only be shipped the following week.
