Delicate Feathery Fern

Scientific Name: Adiantum spp.
Common Names / Known As: Maidenhair Fern, Maiden hair Fern, Delta Maidenhair, Five-Finger Fern

Overview: The Maidenhair Fern is an elegant houseplant with delicate, fan-shaped fronds on wiry black stems, native to tropical and subtropical regions. Its airy, feathery foliage adds a soft, graceful touch to indoor spaces, ideal for shaded corners or humid environments.

Quirky Fact / Common Use: Its name comes from the Greek “adiantos,” meaning “unwetted,” as its leaves repel water, causing droplets to bead and roll off like tiny jewels. In ancient SA Zulu traditions, maidenhair fern is brewed into tea for soothing coughs during chilly October braai nights—its lacy fronds symbolise whispered blessings for epic family jolls and healthy vibes!

Available in: 12cm Nursery Pots

Ideal For:

  • Cosy flats, small townhouses, open-plan offices, bathrooms & limited-space braais in Joburg or Cape Town homes
  • Beginner plant lovers or as a thoughtful gift—fussy diva but rewarding with daily misting love!
  • A must-have for air-purifying oxygen boost, adding lacy texture & feathery contrast to terrarium mixes or mixed planters. It’s elegantly smooth foliage makes a subtle statement and grows to 30-60cm—ideal for table tops, counter tops, office desks or school counters.
(Received plants may differ slightly from images displayed. Unless otherwise specified, all Plants come in black nursery pots)

🌿 Care: Dry air makes it droop like a drama queen at a jol—mist daily or use a pebble tray to avoid crispy brown edges! Overwatering causes yellow spots; let top 2cm dry slightly between drinks. Trim damaged fronds at base for fresh bounce. Pro tip: Group with mates for a mini SA rainforest vibe to boost humidity!

☀️ Light: Indirect low to medium light—loves north-facing windows or under grow lights; direct sun scorches like a Karoo braai!

💧 Watering: Keep soil evenly moist (every 5-7 days); use room-temp water & ensure good drainage—never let it sit in soggy saucer like drowned vetkoek!

🌡️ Temperature: 18-24°C—perfect for mild SA springs & cosy winter homes; keep away from icy draughts or hot braai vents below 15°C.

🍽️ Feeding: Use Slow Release Fertilizer pellets every 3 months year-round, or Apply a balanced, diluted Liquid Fertilizer (e.g., 5:1:4) every 4 weeks in spring & summer; skip in winter.

Pet Friendly?Yes—totally safe for cats, dogs, kids & humans; fine for non-aquatic setups, but not for live fish tanks or ponds. 🐶🐱

What would you like to see:

To ensure fresh and healthy plants we follow a strict weekly shipping schedule:

Mondays: We prepare plants for shipping! This means wrapping the soil, adding plant sleeves, and one last pre-travel watering.
Tuesdays: We wake up bright and early to get all plants carefully packaged for shipping in the morning, in the afternoon we hand over plants with the longest travel ahead of them to our courier partners (this means Eastern, Western and Northern Cape)
Wednesdays: If there are any plants that did not fit in the Tuesday truck, they travel in the second batch on a Wednesday.
Thursdays and Fridays: No plants are shipped, we carefully monitor all the travelling plant babies to ensure they arrive safely at their new homes !

Why do we do this?

Our shipping schedule works this way to ensure that your plants are less likely to spend a weekend in the courier depot ! Our shipping schedule is designed this way to ensure that your plants are fresh and healthy, for this same reason we do not like keeping stock for extended periods of time which means that stock received on Thursdays and Fridays will only be shipped the following week.
