Ah, isn’t it nice to unpack your shorts and breathe in the spring air? Your house plants are just as happy as you are! No more stressing about your plants being cold or dropping leaves. Now is the time to admire the new growth around your house and prepare for the season ahead! The seasons have changed and so should your plant routine.
But why should you change your plant care just because winter is over?
In this blog, I will highlight a few important things that you should know to have lush, flourishing, and happy house plants in this season.
1. Drinking more water? So is your plant!
When the temperature goes up, your plants dry out faster than they did during the colder months. This means that your plants might require more regular watering than you were providing during the last few months.
2. Is your plant thirsty?
Some houseplants make it very obvious that they need water. Some clear signs include:
- Curling leaves
- Drooping leaves
- Wilted leaves
Other ways to find out if your plant needs water:
- Stick your finger into the soil, if the soil is dry and your finger comes out clean- it’s time to water.
- Lift the pot, if it is really light- it’s time to water.
- Use a moisture meter (available on our website) if it says that your plant is dry- it’s time to water.
If you’ve checked all of this and you’re still not sure if you should water, rather don’t. Overwatering is the leading cause of death for houseplants. Your plant will recover easier from being underwatered than it will from being overwatered. Wait a few more days until you’re sure they’re thirsty and water then.
3. How to water:
- We always recommend bottom-watering houseplants. Let your plant stand in a bowl of water for a few hours so that it can soak up all of the water it needs through its roots.
- Don’t let your plants stand in water for extended periods of time. This WILL lead to root rot.
3. Time to fertilize!
Now is the perfect time to fertilize your houseplants and give them those extra minerals and nutrients that they might have lost throughout winter. There are tons of fertilizers on the market and they all work differently. Not sure what to use? Send us a message and we’ll help you decide.
4. Repotting
If some of your plants are getting too big for their boots (or their pots) now is the time to repot them. They will all be going through a big boost in growth and a new pot might be just what they need for that growth to be activated. Need a repotting mat? We’ve got you covered.
5. Plant Maintenance
Some yellow leaves after the winter? Time to cut those off, dust those leaves, and give your plants some extra attention to make them shine again. They will reward you with glorious new leaves or roots in return.
With this knowledge, you and your plants will be thriving in the season to come! When you look around, you can already see new growth points and new greenery in nature. Be prepared for the heat of summer and what that will mean for your plants. Don’t worry, we’re right here to help if any of your plants are struggling.
